The language of instruction in mathematics teacher education for the early grades

Background: Teaching mathematics in junior primary classroom requires an understanding of concepts and knowledge to communicate them applicably. The role language instruction is thus deemed significant creating adequate insight into mathematical content. Teacher training institutions are therefore required produce skilful teachers utilise the mother tongue (MT) as medium instructing mathematics.Aim: Lecturers’ perceptions on use MT teaching viewed crucial determining values emphasis they place preparation student effectively teach MT. study aims at uncovering lecturers regarding University.Setting: was conducted one University Namibia campuses which train teachers.Methods: Purposive sampling used select four lecturers. Semistructured individual interviews were obtain lecturers’ perspective stated issue.Results: Findings indicated that although aware benefit MT, not all agreement with especially university. further there various impediments for university including students’ background lack resources, who speak MT.Conclusion: A recommendation deriving from two parallel policies education implemented, pertaining school environment, under control Ministry Education, tertiary education, auspices For it advocated courses embrace both official English language, well Mother Tongue, equal proportions.
